DIY Your Own Headshots with these 5 Steps.
I know that there are a lot of college graduates who are not only missing out on their graduation, now they have to think about finding a job during the COVID-19 pandemic and how can they get a professional headshot to submit with their resume.
Whether you are a college student or on a budget, you can easily DIY your own headshots with these 5 tips.
Tip #1: Choose Your Camera.
You can use your cell phone, a point-and-shoot camera, or a DSLR. Whatever you have would work as long as you have good lighting. Check out the bonus tip!
Tip #2: Choose Your Background.
Choose a plain background (white or light-colored wall) or outdoor backdrop (urban or park). I recommend choosing a neutral or a park with only trees in the background to avoid any distractions.
Tip #3: Choose Your Outfit.
Select an outfit that fits and makes you feel good. For men, I recommend a suit and tie. For women, I recommend business attire or business casual outfit. A little color is ok. Remember to choose your outfit for the profession you are looking to get into. Avoid any trends.
Tip #4: Choose Someone.
Ask a family member or a friend to take your headshot. Or use a tripod, then set the timer on your camera.
Tip #5: Edit Picture.

Bonus Tip: Lighting
The best lighting is free – natural light (aka sunlight). Face toward the light when you are taking your headshots so your face is well lit. If you are indoor, and the window or door you are facing is too bright, you can put up one or two sheer curtains to soften the lighting. If you are outside, find a shaded area, make sure you are in the shade, and then face the sunlight.

Here’s an example of a headshot that I did at home. My husband used my DSLR and took this picture in our dining room with a beige wall. I did some editing to it using Lightroom and Photoshop. There is plenty of free editing software out there to achieve this too! You got this!
